TUTORIAL #11
my eleventh tutorial -- how to make this icon in 14 steps:

i'm going to make a tutorial on how i created this icon:

step 01:

decide on the picture you want to use. i chose a screencap i took of POTC2. i know it's a crummy cap -- it's a bootleg, whoops! -- but i hope to make the icon a bit better. maybe better POTC2 caps will be out soon.

step 02:

resize your image and crop it.

step 03:

duplicate your image and desaturate the new layer. set that layer to screen, 66%.

step 04:

duplicate the first layer and bring it to the top. set that layer to soft light (100% opacity) and sharpen it once.

step 05:

duplicate the top layer and set that layer to screen, 15% opacity.

step 06:

go to layer >> new adjustment layer >> hue/saturation and set the saturation level to -100.

step 07:

go to layer >> new adjustment layer >> brightness/contrast and set brightness to +7 and contrast to +16. feel free to fiddle with these levels.

step 08:

right click the icon and select 'select all'. then go to edit >> copy merged and the paste that image on top as a new layer. sharpen it if you like but set it to soft light, 59% opacity.

step 09:

i wanted a bit of color so i created a new layer and filled it with #C7A2A2. set that layer to soft light, 25 % opacity.

step 10:

create a new layer. using the rectangle marquee tool, create a small rectangle on the left of the icon. fill the rectangle with #C7A2A2 and set that layer to lighten.

step 11:

i wanted the bottle to stick out, so, using the round erasher brush, erase some of the pink line.

step 12:

using this brush (i forget where i got it, so, if you know, let me know so i can credit):

make a layer with the brush on it in #FFFFFF. duplicate it if you want it to stand out more -- i did.

step 13:

add a 4 px white border around the icon.

step 14:

for the last step, put some text over that white brush. i used century gothic, bold, 4pt for the small text and arial, bold, 12pt for the word "rum".

and, there it is. 14 steps to making an icon.

+ comments are appreciated; i'd love to see what you created.

I'm having trouble making the brush white. Help? Other than that, everything else was wonderful. Thanks!

I think I use a different program then you, but when you open the brush as an image to save it as a brush, you have to convert it to grayscale first.

(I use GIMP, so...)

This is so great! I am making a tutorial page and with your permission would love to add this, on the page there would be the final image and when you click it, it will link back to this page, you can ask for it to be removed at any time, OK?
